Leaving a legacy

If you believe that music has the power to changes lives, please consider remembering the London Music Fund in your Will.

By doing so you will enable us to continue transforming under-served communities by enabling children to access high-quality music education. No matter the size of the gift, we can guarantee that it will make a very significant difference to the lives of young musicians in London long into the future.

There are different ways in which you could decide to leave a gift to the London Music Fund:

  • Residuary gift: a gift of a percentage of your estate once all other gifts have been made and expenses paid for the value of your estate. This type of gift is useful as it maintains its value over time, reflecting your true intentions.

  • Pecuniary legacy gift: A cash gift of a specific amount of money from your estate. Inflation can lessen the actual value of your gift over time. Index-linking your gift in line with the consumer or retail prices index can prevent this. A simple example (which you should check with your legal adviser) would be ‘I give to London Music Fund registered charity number 1141216 for its general charitable purposes the amount found by dividing [AMOUNT] by the consumer prices index figure for the month in which this document is executed and multiplying the result by the consumer prices index for the month in which I die’.

  • Specific legacy: A gift of a particular item such jewellery pictures or shares. It may be that the London Music Fund would need to sell these assets in order to utilise the proceeds as appropriate. If you are considering leaving a non-monetary legacy, we would encourage you to discuss this with us.

You could choose to restrict your gift, to be used for a particular purpose that aligns with the needs of the London Music Fund, or leave an unrestricted gift, particularly valuable as it affords the London Music Fund the flexibility to allocate the gift to areas of greatest need.

A gift to charity is free from inheritance tax. If you are a UK taxpayer a legacy gift will be deducted from your estate before any tax liability is calculated.  If you leave an amount that equals more than 10% of your net estate to charity then the headline tax rate for the rest of the estate then potentially decreases by 4% to 36% from 40%.

Whilst we appreciate that the nature of your Will is a personal matter and recommend that such decisions are taken with professional legal advice, we would be happy to discuss your plans with you, and acknowledge your support. Please contact Chrissy Kinsella, CEO: chrissy@londonmusicfund.org
