Meet the Performers – James, Violin

We are delighted that James will be performing in our concert on 7 May. James was a part of our very first Scholarship cohort in 2011, and music continues to play an important role in his life. Since graduating in 2022, James has worked in finance for RWE, and plays the violin with the Odyssey Orchestra in his spare time.

Tell us about your experience of being a LMF Scholar

I was part of the first cohort of Scholars that started in 2011. I was supported through the Scholarship for four years, during which time I had opportunities to perform solos at Mansion House and City Hall. The experiences were invaluable and they gave me the confidence to grow and improve in my playing. I was also fortunate to win the outstanding Scholar award at LMF’s 2014 London Music Awards, and I am still playing with the violin which I chose as the prize!

What are you performing in the concert, and what are you looking forward to about the concert?

I will be performing Karl Jenkins' Palladio at the concert on 7th May with the string group. The piece is a big crowd pleaser and very enjoyable to play! I'm also looking forward to catching up with the other Scholars and to hear all about the work the London Music Fund has done since I left.

What does playing music mean to you?

Music plays a big part in my life. I enjoy playing with the Odyssey Festival Orchestra, which is for 18-30 year olds. It is a very nice way for me to continue playing alongside fantastic musicians now I am working in London.

What impact do you think music has on the world?

I think Music can open people up to new experiences. Both playing music and watching music being performed can offer people new opportunities to discover more about others.

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

I look up to people who follow their passion for music. Whether that be musicians creating their own music or teachers passing on their skills.

What is your dream performance?

I've always enjoyed watching the London Symphony Orchestra play. It would be a dream to play with the best orchestra in the world!
