Meet our Award Winners — Mathew

Mathew is a 2021-25 trumpet Scholar from Barnet Education Arts Trust. At our Summer Celebration Day, Mathew won the Teamwork and Ensembles Award, which is awarded to Scholars who have demonstrated teamwork skills and have musically encouraged their peers.

Mathew has consistently demonstrated commitment through his attendance, dedication to perfecting his parts, and collaborative spirit. Mathew consistently volunteers to assist with cleanup after sessions, going above and beyond to help not only with his own belongings but also aiding the drummer in packing up the drum kit and moving chairs.

What does being a London Music Fund Scholar mean to you?

Being a London Music Fund Scholar means a lot to me. It is like an open door that gives me the chance to further my musical education by having access to resources and opportunities that I may not have had otherwise.

It also encourages me to further grow my love for music by being inspired and surrounded by other musicians who share the same passion.

What have you enjoyed the most about being a London Music Fund Scholar?

What I have enjoyed the most about being a London Music Fund Scholar is the opportunity to acquire musical knowledge that allows me to integrate music so much into my life. This is through rehearsals, lessons, and playing in various concerts and events organised by the Academy and LMF. Additionally, it has opened other music-related doors, such as being accepted into my church's adult brass band, which gives me the chance to play extra music every week.

What are your musical goals for the future?

My musical goals for the future include continuing to improve my skills as a musician, reaching a higher level and performing in more concerts and events .

I want to have music as part of my everyday life .
